A Brief History
In 2002, Timberline Oldtown Church (then called Joshua’s Crossing) moved into the space at 144 S. Mason. With the building only being used on Sundays, it sat empty six days a week. Several informed people from the church body did not see this as being okay. They wanted something in it during the week that would benefit the community. A non-profit coffee house is what they thought up and Everyday Joe’s was born.
What We're About
Everyday Joe’s was never meant to be a “Christian coffee house”. It is a coffee house run by Christians. We’re interested in developing and fostering something our
society seems to value less & less - community and relationships. It’s also nice to see people will get on board with that.
We are interested in expressing the presence of the Living Christ in Oldtown. However, we don’t think this is accomplished through handing out a Bible with each latte and blasting certain tunes over the speakers. For the last little while, the idea of wolves & lambs being in the room together has served as a proper illustration of what we hope to accomplish...being a place where anyone can come and use the computer and get a cup of coffee and warm up. Where city government officials can meet, lawyers can wait for verdicts, students can study, and a person who lives on the streets can read a book and feel loved and try to get back on their feet. These are people whom most wouldn’t think of as sharing a room, but it’s what we see within the walls of 144 S. Mason every single day.
Non - Profit?
A non-profit coffee house and concert venue is not something you come across
everyday. One of the most common questions we get is, “What do you mean you’re non-profit? Where does the money go?” Well, here’s an explanation in list form:
Support Of Local Organizations: For some time, we gave away $200 a month as a rule. As we continue to examine the living and breathing organism that is Everyday Joe's under the microscope of sustainability (financial, environmental, and otherwise), the decision has been made to suspend our monthly giving and return to a model of yearly giving. This has forced us to really look at the idea of "non-profit" from a creative perspective, figuring out how we can support local organizations and ministries through means besides monetary donations. Some results have included continuing to give away our space for use, continuing to host benefit concerts, in-kind donations pretty much whenever we're asked, and upcoming Coffee & Goodness nights.
Yearly Giving: At the end of the financial year, we give away all profits to another community-minded organization in the area.
In-Kind Donations: Throughout the year, we give in-kind donations as often as possible...donating coffee, gift cards and coupons to organizations raising money through silent auctions or wanting to thank the people that serve them.
Room Usage: When an organization comes to us wanting to use the space to host a benefit concert or fundraising event, we find a way to get them on the calendar. We also let them use the room for free and donate our portion of the ticket sales (10%) to the organization.
Our Volunteers
With only two paid employees and 40+ volunteers, Everyday Joe’s is truly a volunteer-powered venture. It’s not uncommon to hear someone say that they notice something different when they walk through the doors at 144 S. Mason and this is partly due to the fact that most of the Everyday Joe’s staff you interact with are here because they want to be, not because they need to collect a pay check. From our baristas behind the bar to the folks running sound for our concerts, Everyday Joe’s is powered by people who care about the community.
However, we don’t let our volunteers go un-rewarded. We host volunteer parties as often as possible, they get to attend concerts at Everyday Joe’s for free, and they receive a discount on their purchases. Also, they get to keep their tips. So please, tip them and shake their hand.
Our Coffee & Tea
At Everyday Joe’s, we take our beverages quite seriously. We believe they must be as delicious as possible, or why would you want to come back?
Our Coffee: We proudly brew beans roasted by Novo Coffee in Denver, CO. Novo is a company committed to taking the drinker to each coffee's origins - historical and geographical. Novo is committed to relationships with the farmers they buy their coffee from - a practice known as direct trade. So, by buying a drink at Everyday Joe’s, you’re actually just two steps away from a farmer & their family half-way across the world. How’s that for community, eh?
French Press: None of the house coffee at Everyday Joe’s is drip-brewed en masse. We brew our coffee in small batches using the French Press method. This allows all of the nice tasting oils that give different coffees their distinct characteristics to make their way into your cup. Fantastic.
Hario V60 Drip Weekly Offering: There are many ways to brew single cups of coffee. The folks at Hario have discovered something magical. That magic is a ceramic conical drip station that sits on your cup, has a giant hole in the bottom, and some swirling ribbing that creates a whirlpool to assist in proper extraction. It all works together in a way that will make your taste buds scream for joy. Each week, we carry a different bean for our by the cup option.
Specialty Drinks: When it comes to ordering a latte or cappuccino or other espresso-based beverage, you can be sure that it is hand crafted with love. We pull each shot by hand after freshly grinding the beans. We also steam the milk for each drink individually so it is fresh and most likely beyond tasty. If we don’t like the way a drink is coming together, we’ll scrap it and start over...just for you.
Chai Tea: We make our Chai concentrate in-house most everyday. It starts with a Black Chai base, then we add cinnamon, sugar, nutmeg, ground cardamom, and vanilla extract. After a hands-on process of mixing and straining, it’s ready to be prepared for your consumption.
Loose Leaf Teas: All our loose leaf teas are blended locally by The Tea Table. They are quite tasty and we prepare them by the cup. Disappointment on your end is highly doubtful.
Live Music & Art
At Everyday Joe’s, we love several things very much. Two of these things are live music and visual art. We believe quite strongly in the promotion of the arts, as they are the result of our built-in ability & desire to create.
At Everyday Joe’s, we believe in giving a venue to artists who may not be able to play or display their work otherwise. We also desire for artists to be able to make a sustainable living if their craft warrants it. We do not take any commission from sales of visual art and the artist is not charged a fee for wall space. Similarly, at a concert where a cover is charged, artists take 90% of the total ticket sales and 100% of merchandise sales. Neither of these figures are common practice in the live music industry. If a musician decides to go with a suggested donation instead of a cover charge, they take 100% of what they make at the door.
The visual art on the walls is 100% local. It changes at the beginning of each month.
The musicians who are kind enough to grace the Everyday Joe’s stage perform on both a local and national scale. We’ve had the privilege of seeing several folks get their start at 144 S. Mason and go on to be national and international successes. We’ve also had the privilege of hosting several musicians who usually play venues twice as large as Everyday Joe’s, but they believe in what happens here and want to contribute what they can.
